TSLC director Brendan Condon helped design a new type of water efficient wicking bed, the ‘Foodcube’ for our sister company Biofilta. This project at a school in Springvale highlights the versatility of the Foodcube.
After many years of using higher maintenance conventional raised garden beds, Athol Road Primary School’s Sustainability teacher reached out to Biofilta to transform their school’s growing area. Biofilta’s Foodcube wicking beds were installed and clad by the school staff with recycled timber, and incorporated into the existing garden sitting alongside composting, vertical berry production, poultry, an orchard and beekeeping.
This project showcases how schools can produce large amounts of food in small spaces, to teach about soil health, seed banks, plant propagation, urban farming, urban biodiversity, and local urban food production. The farm is designed to produce over 1.5 tonnes of produce per annum to be distributed to students and their families.
