Melbourne Skyfarm is a unique urban sustainability, food, and education platform on the roof of a carpark in the Melbourne CBD. We designed the 2000m2 rooftop landscape for multiple environmental, social, and economic functions and outcomes.
We approached the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre with the idea of repurposing this unused carpark rooftop, and turning it into a thrivivng, biodiverse and productive landscape. The project is backed by the City of Melbourne’s Urban Forest Fund, and uses hundreds of self-watering Biofilta Foodcube wicking beds to capture rainwater for irrigation. Native biodiversity plantings and food plants are creating an oasis in the city and contribute to urban cooling.
We recently completed the urban farming part of the landscape and the productive urban farm has grown heaps of fresh vegetables that have been donated to food charity Ozharvest. The rest of the rooftop venue and sustainability innovation centre will open to the public in late 2023 when building works are complete.
