Located in Altona North in western Melbourne, at Toyota’s historic manufacturing site, a brand-new urban farm is thriving.
Designed and constructed by The Sustainable Landscape Company (TSLC) for the offices of Toyota Motor Corporation Australia, the productive workplace farm is being enjoyed by staff in Toyota’s After Sales division.
Using Biofilta’s Australian designed and manufactured, super water efficient, wicking Foodcubes made from 80% recycled food grade plastic, with their proprietary cladding and trellises, we have created a thriving workplace farm that has the capacity to produce over 230 kilograms of produce per annum. This makes a significant contribution to reducing food bills and improving nutrition for staff.
Previously an under-utilised outdoor lunch space, the area has been revitalised with seating nooks constructed from composite recycled plastic and wood slats, Toyota’s workplace farm also provides green outdoor space for staff to gather and engage with the garden and each other, supporting improved mental health and wellbeing. Food crops that reflect the cultural diversity of staff are also rotated through the workplace farm, supporting social and cultural inclusion.
Environmental sustainability is a crucial part of many major companies’ operations and social responsibility. Having an immersive outdoor area and workplace farm landscape creates opportunities for staff to engage with their environment and the rhythms of nature and provides a setting from which to run environmental education programs. At TSLC we also aim to use locally sourced and more sustainable materials where possible in construction.
