Food for charities in Melbourne

Urban farms can play their part in building food security in our cities and communities. Check out this short film on a number of productive pop-up water efficient urban farms in Melbourne and regional Victoria that have been donating significant amounts of food to local charities over the past 6 months.

These farms such as The Cape Farm and Melbourne Skyfarm have been harvesting and donating food to food charities this summer, and show another way to increase the supply of fresh food to those who need it.

All of these farms are sited in carparks or underutilised spaces that were bare spaces not so long ago. They are capturing and diverting surplus organic resources and nutrients such as foodwaste and greenwaste and cycling this back into local food production. The farms incorporate Foodcube wicking beds and have been designed and built by our team here at TSLC.

We are under no illusions that urban farms will replace the important work done by our food growing experts – our farmers – and that we need to support our farmers and take action on climate change. But we also recognise that well designed urban farming can help augment food supply and help build the circular economy and increase the supply of fresh food to food charities.
